From Divemaster to PADI Assistant Instructor
Are you already a Divemaster and want to get more involved in dive training? In the PADI Assistant Instructor Course, you will learn how to convey your knowledge clearly, teach diving skills effectively, and support dive students in their learning.
At how2dive, you will further develop your skills for working in dive training. The focus is on lesson planning, practical demonstrations, and responsible interaction with dive students.
Your Entry into Dive Instructor Training
The Assistant Instructor Course is the first part of the PADI Instructor Development Course, or IDC for short. You can complete it as a standalone training level.
This earns you the PADI Assistant Instructor qualification. It is not yet equivalent to becoming an Open Water Scuba Instructor. If you wish to progress further later, your path will lead through the OWSI program and the subsequent Instructor Examination – each subject to fulfilling the applicable prerequisites. PADI Course Description
What you will learn in the course
- Explain theory clearly and structure lessons
- Apply the PADI training system and associated standards
- Demonstrate diving skills clearly and comprehensibly
- Prepare and organize practical exercises
- Identify learning difficulties and provide helpful feedback
- Supervise dive students during training
- Identify and consider risks in training activities
You will practice looking at tasks from an instructor’s perspective: What should a dive student learn? How do you explain an exercise? And how do you recognize if the learning objective has been achieved?
Connecting Theory and Practice
The training combines theoretical content with practical teaching exercises in confined open water or pool and in open water.
You will prepare lesson sequences, present content, and practice guiding dive students. Feedback will help you further develop your explanations, demonstrations, and organization.
Your Responsibilities as an Assistant Instructor
As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you support PADI Instructors in training and can take on certain teaching tasks. The activities you are permitted to conduct independently or under supervision depend on the respective PADI standards, your status, and any additional qualifications.
The training thus expands your opportunities compared to the Divemaster level, but it does not replace the full Open Water Scuba Instructor qualification. PADI explains the duties of an Assistant Instructor
